Why Major in French at OSU?
-
We offer a number of tracks (culture -- literature -- individualized learning, etc.) with various subspecialties including business French, cinema, gender studies, and French-speaking cultures outside of France.
-
French is an excellent choice for double majors. It combines well with studies in other foreign languages, History, Political Science, International Relations, International Business, Communication, Film Studies, Foreign Language Education, Medicine, as well as the sciences.
-
Each major is assigned to a faculty advisor who meets individually with students throughout the program to aid their progress towards graduation.
-
The university has an outstanding and very dynamic Honors Program in which 30% of our majors participate.
-
We have outstanding and very affordable study abroad programs, with availability of travel fellowships.
-
A number of fellowship and prize opportunities are offered by the Department of French and Italian, as well as the College of Humanities.
-
We use state-of-the art technology in our multi-media classrooms, high-tech on-line language labs, and the World Media and Culture Center.
-
We offer great courses. Some recent course titles include: From Jazz to Freedom Fries, Le Québec à travers son expression culturelle, La Chanson française.
-
Our students have easy access to native speakers, not only professors and a number of GTAs from French-speaking countries, but also large groups (between 50 and 100) of business students from France who come each spring to study at our Fisher College of Business.
-
Our dynamic French Club participates in sharing French and Francophone culture, sponsoring French films, and other community-wide events.
-
There are excellent job opportunities available after graduation.
-
The university offers a Master of Foreign Language Education program leading to Teaching Licensure that begins in the summer and may be completed in four quarters, either in conjunction with or after your French degree.
