Annual Lecture Series: 'Great Expectations' in 2012: Revisiting the Link Between L2 Research and L2 Teaching

In 1985, Patsy Lightbown published her widely read and cited “Great expectations: Second language acquisition research and classroom teaching” in Applied Linguistics. In this article, she summarized SLA research by stating 10 generalizations which were consistent with the research to that date. She concluded that while this research could not serve as the basis for telling instructors what to teach or how, SLA research was one important source of information which would help teachers set appropriate expectations for themselves and for their students. In this talk, Dr. Lightbown revisits and reassesses these ten generalizations first made in 1985 for L2 scholars and L2 instructors in 2012.
Reception to follow the lecture.
