EM/Transfer Credit

Is there a test I can take to test out of a course?

Yes, there is a test called a proficiency test, or an "EM test," which gives you "EM credit." However, you may not take an EM Credit exam for French if you have ever taken a French course at OSU at any time in the past. The test is specifically designed for incoming freshman or students with “extenuating circumstances” such as a year of study abroad that interrupts their course study.

EM credit is given to those students who qualify to take the exam, and who achieve 80% or higher on the test. The test is similar to a final exam for that course, and therefore lasts about 1 hour 48 minutes.

You may take EM tests for any course. French 101, 102, and 103 EM tests are the most common. These tests include a listening portion, a reading passage, a composition, and various activities based on the grammar and vocabulary covered in the textbook Invitation. Below is a list of the chapters covered in each course:

  • French 101 Invitation, chapters 1-6
  • French 102 Invitation, chapters 7-12
  • French 103 Invitation, chapters 13-16

If you want to test out of 102.66, you would take the 101 and 102 exams; to test out of 103.66, take the 102 and 103 exams.

The French 104 EM test is based on material covered in chapters 1-6 and chapter 8 in Bravo! This test includes both listening and written portions. The written portion consists of several short essays which require you to use the expressions, grammar, and vocabulary in Bravo! Students wishing to take the 104 EM test are strongly encouraged to study the appropriate chapters in Bravo!

For information on EM tests above level 104 French, please contact the departmental office at 292-4938 for the current academic year EM Credit Advisor above the 104 level.

To arrange a date and time to take an EM test through 104 level French, please consult the EM Credit/Transfer Credit Advisor Justin Ehrenberg.
