Heysel has taught at Connecticut College, Utah State University and Lycoming College where he was associate professor and chair of modern language studies before returning to OSU in 2006. Heysel was also dean of the French Language Village at Concordia Language Villages in Minnesota for 14 summers. Until 2011 he served as senior associate director of the University Honors and Scholars Center here at OSU. He is currently Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences responsible for curriculum in Arts and Humanities and the office of International Initiatives. His research interests involve the intersections of queer desire and corporeal representation in avant guard art, popular press, film and literature and he has published in the areas if 19th and 20th-century French literature, culture, and film. He continues to enjoy teaching on occasion in his home department.
