Fabled French novelist and playwright Marie Nimiers first play in the U.S., "Another Year, Another Christmas" (Noël revient tous les ans), translated by Dr. Peter Schulman, and directed by Hollie Klem, will be presented in Columbus Ohio by the Haberdasher Theater company. Marie Nimier is one of Frances beloved novelists, songwriters, childrens book writer, and screenwriters. She is known for her surreal and magical writings such as Sirène (Mermaid), and Les Inséparables (The Inseparable Ones), and for her daring plays. "Another Year, Another Christmas" was first performed in Paris at Le Théâtre du Rond-Point to sold out performances, but surprisingly none of her plays have been performed in the U.S. until now.
"Another Year, Another Christmas" explores each year, a mother, a son, and his current "girlfriend(s)" at the time of meeting for a Christmas dinner that reveals the family's dysfunction and hidden tragedies of loss and death. Despite the comedic mishaps that take place each year, the mother and son grow closer together and learn to appreciate their short time together on earth. Through Marie Nimiers inventive use of language and word play, "Another Year, Another Christmas" attempts to highlight the ways in which language can communicate deep emotions that are sometimes hidden within the veneer of formality and routine.
