In French 4401 “Le Féérique et le fantastique” we have been reading “contes de fées” (fairy tales) by sophisticated writers of the period 1690-1757, many of them women. Cinderella’s science fiction is a dress and shoes for the ball, Belle is lonely in the Beast’s castle but furnished with a fabulous wardrobe… French fiction is full of clothing fantasies. It’s fun to see what it was like to dress and move as a woman of the past.
