Scholarships awarded by the Department of French and Italian can support: 

  • Ohio State tuition for academic year 2026-27,
  • and/or study abroad in Summer 2026, Fall 2026, and Spring 2027.

The objective of these awards is to help students improve their fluency in French and Italian while immersing themselves in Francophone and Italian-speaking cultures. Priority is given to applicants to such programs.

If the program for which you intend to apply does not yet have applications open (e.g., Spring 2027), you may you may simply state in your application the name of the program, its dates, and when you intend to apply. In all cases, no study abroad scholarships are disbursed until after the student provides proof of enrollment in the study abroad program to the Department of French and Italian.

Students who plan to study abroad in Summer 2026, Autumn 2026, or Spring 2027 should apply through Scholarship Universe by the March 13, 2026 deadline.

Students may need to search for eligible scholarships in the Scholarship Universe database. All materials must be submitted electronically via the Scholarship Universe interface. Please do not send application materials to the Department directly.

Department Scholarships

Created by Ohio State alumna Mary Galvin. One prize will be awarded annually to provide funds towards tuition for students majoring in French or French and Francophone Studies. 

Amount of award

Awards up to $2,000

Eligibility

  • Students majoring in French or French and Francophone Studies
  • Students majoring in Romance Studies with French as one of their languages.
  • Students must be enrolled full-time during the academic year (12 credit hours per semester minimum) or enrolled in at least 3 credit hours in summer if the award is to be used then
  • Sophomore standing
  • Applicants must have a GPA of at least 2.75

Established in 2022, the Joseph B. Borgo Endowed Scholarship Fund in French or Italian Studies is intended for students interested in French and Italian Studies.

Amount of award

Awards up to $5,000

Eligibility

  • Students majoring in French or Italian
  • Enrollment in a minimum of 6 credit hours
  • Open to high school students and current Ohio State students

The French and Italian Scholarship is intended for students majoring or minoring in French, Italian, or Romance Studies (with French or Italian as primary language). The scholarship may be used for study and/or research where there is a component in the target language (study abroad, international internships, research projects).

Awards between $1,500-$3,000

Eligibility

  • Students majoring or minoring in any FRIT program
  • Enrollment in a minimum of 6 credit hours
  • Open to all student ranks

Study Abroad Scholarships & Funding

One prize will be awarded annually to provide funds towards study abroad for students majoring or minoring in any FRIT program.

Awards up to $5,000

Eligibility

  • OSU undergraduate students majoring or minoring in any FRIT program
  • Students majoring in Romance Studies with French or Italian as one of their languages.
  • Applicant must be at the 3000-level or above in French or Italian
  • Applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.0
  • Participation in an OSU-sponsored study abroad program required

The Price Traveling Scholarships were created for the purpose of helping undergraduate students majoring or minoring in French, French and Francophone Studies, or Romance Studies with French as their primary language to participate in a study abroad program to help improve their fluency in French and to increase their knowledge of French or Francophone cultures. Decisions will be based on the quality of the applicant's written statement (see application), their overall GPA (and in particular performance in French courses), and faculty recommendations.

Eligibility

  • OSU undergraduate students majoring in French or French and Francophone Studies or minoring in French
  • Students majoring in Romance Studies with French or Italian as one of their languages.
  • Applicant must be at the intermediate level and have completed or currently be enrolled in French 2101
  • Applicant must be accepted to an OSU-sponsored program abroad
  • Applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.0.

Open only to undergraduate students with financial need participating in the Global May Paris study abroad program.
