Department Scholarship Competition
Scholarships awarded by the Department of French and Italian can support:
- Ohio State tuition for academic year 2026-27,
- and/or study abroad for spring or summer of 2027.
The objective of these awards is to help students improve their fluency in French and Italian while immersing themselves in Francophone and Italian-speaking cultures. Priority is given to applicants to such programs.
If the program for which you intend to apply does not yet have applications open (e.g., Summer 2027), you may you may simply state in your application the name of the program, its dates, and when you intend to apply. There will be another call for applications in Spring semester, and students who plan to study abroad in Summer 2027 may apply during either the Autumn or Spring round. In all cases, no study abroad scholarships are disbursed until after the student provides proof of enrollment in the study abroad program to the Department of French and Italian.
Interested students should apply by Monday, October 19th, 2026.
Students may need to search for eligible scholarships in the Scholarship Universe database. All materials must be submitted electronically via the Scholarship Universe interface. Please do not send application materials to the Department directly.

Department Scholarships
Ornelio & Diamond DiPietro Scholarship
Established August 30, 2000, by Ronald E. Burch in honor of his grandparents through The Foundation. Income supports the Ornelio and Diamond DePietro Scholarship in the Department of French and Italian for an undergraduate with a French or Italian major preparing for a career in education, focusing on grades K-12. Income may also support a study-abroad experience. Preference is for students with need.

One $2,500 award
Eligibility
- Students majoring in French or French and Francophone Studies
- Students majoring in Italian or Italian Studies
- Students majoring in Romance Studies with French or Italian as one of their languages
- Enrollment in a minimum of 6 credit hours
- Students preparing for a career in education, focusing on grades K-12
- Preference for students with need
French and Italian Scholarship
The French and Italian Scholarship is intended for students majoring or minoring in French, Italian, or Romance Studies (with French or Italian as primary language). The scholarship may be used for study and/or research where there is a component in the target language (study abroad, international internships, research projects).
Amount of award
Awards between $1,500-$3,000
Eligibility
- Students majoring or minoring in any FRIT program
- Enrollment in a minimum of 6 credit hours
- Open to all student ranks
Study Abroad Scholarships & Funding
"Make Their Dreams Come True"
One prize will be awarded annually to provide funds towards study abroad for students majoring or minoring in any FRIT program.
Amount of award
Two awards of $3,000 each.
Eligibility
- OSU undergraduate students majoring or minoring in any FRIT program
- Students majoring in Romance Studies with French or Italian as one of their languages.
- Applicant must be at the 3000-level or above in French or Italian
- Applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.0
- Participation in an OSU-sponsored study abroad program required
Price Traveling Scholarships
The Price Traveling Scholarships were created for the purpose of helping undergraduate students majoring or minoring in French, French and Francophone Studies, or Romance Studies with French as their primary language to participate in a study abroad program to help improve their fluency in French and to increase their knowledge of French or Francophone cultures. Decisions will be based on the quality of the applicant's written statement (see application), their overall GPA (and in particular performance in French courses), and faculty recommendations.
Amount of award
Up to three awards of $2,500 each.
Eligibility
- OSU undergraduate students majoring in French, French & Francophone Studies, or Romance Studies with French as their primary language
- Applicant must be at the intermediate level and have completed or currently be enrolled in French 2101
- Applicant must be accepted to an OSU-sponsored program abroad
- Applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.0.
Global May Paris
Open only to undergraduate students with financial need participating in the Global May Paris study abroad program.
