Departmental Scholarship Competition

Departmental scholarships awarded by the Department of French and Italian can support: 

  • OSU tuition for academic year 2023-24,
  • and/or study abroad in Summer 2023, Fall 2023, and Spring 2024.

If the program for which you intend to apply does not yet have applications open (for Spring 2024, for example), you may provide us with a letter of intent to apply (including relevant program location and dates). In all cases, no study abroad scholarships are disbursed until after the student provides proof of enrollment in the study abroad program to the Department of French and Italian.

Application deadline for Summer 2023 - Spring 2024: March 1, 2023. 

Deadline for Keith  Linda Monda International Experience Scholarships Applications: October 9, 2023

Arthur C. and Laura Bell Chamblin Jahn Memorial Scholarship

One or two prizes will be awarded annually to be used for tuition at The Ohio State University to students in French or Italian who are also majoring in or taking coursework in accounting or other areas of business. Preference will be given to undergraduates at the junior or senior level who have obtained or are obtaining upper-level language skills in French or Italian. Decisions will be based on the quality of the written statement (see application), the overall GPA, performance in French or Italian courses, business courses completed, and faculty recommendations.

Amount of award

One award of $1,300

Eligibility

  • OSU undergraduate students of French or Italian or majoring in Romance Studies with French or Italian as one of their languages, who are also majoring in or taking coursework in accounting or another area of business.
  • Applicant must be at the 3000-level or above in French or Italian
  • Applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.0.
  • All business courses taken should be highlighted in color on the advising report.

Global May Paris Travel Fund

Thanks to a generous donor, the Global May Paris program will award three competitive fellowships of $1,100 each to admitted participants. The money will be used to help pay for the program.

Amount of award

Four awards of $1,000

Eligibility

  • Participation in the Global May Paris Program

If you wish to be considered for this fellowship, submit one personal statement (500 words maximum). You will indicate your name, campus (Columbus or Newark), GPA, Major and Minor, and write two paragraphs (max 250 words each). In the first paragraph, you will demonstrate financial need. In the second paragraph, you will explain  why the Global May Paris Program is important to reach your personal and professional goals. No applications will be accepted after the deadline. 


Italian Study Abroad Scholarship

Three annual prizes will provide funds towards study abroad for undergraduate students majoring or minoring in Italian, or majoring in Romance Studies.

Amount of award

Three awards of $1,200

Eligibility

  • OSU undergraduate students majoring or minoring in Italian; or majoring in Romance Studies with Italian as their primary language.
  • Junior or senior status
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • OSU-sponsored study abroad programs only

"Make Their Dreams Come True"

One prize will be awarded annually to provide funds towards study abroad for a French or Italian major or minor.

Amount of award

Three awards of $1,400

Eligibility

  • OSU undergraduate students majoring or minoring in French or Italian.
  • Students majoring in Romance Studies with French or Italian as one of their languages.
  • Applicant must be at the 3000-level or above in French or Italian
  • Applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.0
  • Participation in an OSU-sponsored study abroad program required

The Ornelio and Diamond DePietro Scholarship Fund

This fund was created in honor of Ornelio and Diamond DePietro and will provide scholarship money for undergraduate students majoring in French or Italian and preparing for a career in education, focusing on grades K-12. This money may also apply to a study abroad experience.

Amount of award

One award of $1,500

Eligibility

  • OSU students majoring or minoring in French and Italian who are preparing for a career in K-12 teaching.
  • Students majoring in Romance Studies with French or Italian as one of their languages.
  • Students must be at the junior or senior levels and have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Preference given to students with demonstrable financial need.
  • If the award is to be used for a study abroad program, the program must be sponsored by OSU.

Price Traveling Scholarships

The Price Traveling Scholarships were created for the purpose of helping undergraduate students majoring or minoring in French, French and Francophone Studies, or Romance Studies with French as their primary language to participate in a study abroad program to help improve their fluency in French and to increase their knowledge of French or Francophone cultures. Decisions will be based on the quality of the applicant's written statement (see application), your overall GPA (and in particular performance in French courses), and faculty recommendations.

Amount of award

One $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student participating in a year-long, Ohio State-sponsored program abroad; and three $1,400 scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate students participating in May, summer, or semester-long Ohio State-sponsored programs abroad. 

Eligibility

  • OSU undergraduate students majoring or minoring in French (priority given to majors)
  • Students majoring in Romance Studies with French or Italian as one of their languages.
  • Applicant must be at the intermediate level and have completed or currently be enrolled in French 2101
  • Applicant must be accepted to an OSU-sponsored program abroad
  • Applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.0.

"Students First, Students Now"

Created by OSU alumna Mary Galvin. One prize will be awarded annually to provide funds towards tuition for students majoring in French.

Amount of award

One award of $1,500

Eligibility

  • OSU undergraduate students majoring French
  • Students majoring in Romance Studies with French as one of their languages.
  • Students must be enrolled full-time during the academic year (12 credit hours per semester minimum) or enrolled in at least 3 credit hours in summer if the award is to be used then
  • Sophomore standing
  • Applicants must have a GPA of at least 2.75

Keith & Linda Monda International Experience Scholarships Fund

Established February 10, 2012 with gifts from Keith D. and Linda L. Monda; used to provide need-based scholarships for students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences to participate in study-abroad programs. Need-based scholarships open to Columbus campus undergraduate students with a declared major in the arts and sciences. Financial need will be determined by the Financial Aid Office based on information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students must have a current FAFSA on file with Ohio State in order to be considered for these scholarships. Awards are made twice each year.
