History 3263: Je suis Charlie?

The Department of History is offering the following course in Autumn 2016.
"People the world over were shocked in 2015 when terrorists gunned down first French cartoonists in their offices, then scores of Parisians in cafés and a concert hall. Most of the young perpetrators were French citizens with roots in France’s former colonies. How can we make sense of these horrific events and the global outpouring they caused? This course will examine the twentieth century in France, focusing on how this small nation became a world leader in the struggle for human rights (as well as fashion!) Yet France has a dark side too, including a history of racism and collaboration with the Nazis in World War II. Our job will be to assess the good, the bad, and the ugly in a Republic with long and close ties to our own."
Professor Alice Conklin
Meeting Days: Wednesdays & Fridays 2:20-3:40
Prerequisites & Special Comments: This course fulfills Group Europe, post-1750 for history majors.
