The Department of French and Italian hosted the first in what will hopefully be an annual Immersion Day inviting high school French students and their teachers to campus. It was a joyous day. In this pilot year, we were delighted to host more than 120 students from 7 different central Ohio high schools. Students rotated through four 20-minute sessions with FRIT faculty and graduate teaching associates. They learned about making ratatouille with Dr. Mark Anthony Arceño and Remy, joined in interactive dance led by Prof. Lucille Toth, discovered Creole with Prof. Ryan Joyce, tried on clothing from the Middle Ages and the 18th century in a crash course on the history of French fashion with Prof. Sarah-Grace Heller, and tasted five different cheeses in a dégustation led by our graduates students. (The Brie was more popular than the Roquefort, it seems!). The program ended with a lunch of classic French onion soup and baguette. Some groups stayed longer for a tour of campus in French. Thanks to all our student and community volunteers who helped make it an interactive day for all. Kudos to Prof Adela Lechintan-Siefer and Academic Program Coordinator Matt for all the work they did on organizing.
