FRIT alumna, Xinyi Tan, wins Distinguished Teaching Award and Professor of the Year

Xinyi Tan

Congratulations to FRIT alumna, Xinyi Tan, Assistant Professor of French and Chinese at Coastal Carolina University, who has accumulated a whole number of achievements during this academic year.

Tan won two college teaching awards for her innovative course design and pedagogy, and curriculum and program building: the Distinguished Teaching Award and Professor of the Year.

She was nominated by her department chair to represent the department for a John B. Durrell Award, which recognizes a faculty member's overall contributions to the college during an academic year. In addition, Tan's abilities to develop a robust Chinese curriculum and to retain a large number of students resulted in a new minor in Chinese Studies.

Tan also has a forthcoming article and a peer-reviewed book chapter:

“La joueuse de go (2001) by Shan Sa: A Battle of Eroticism and Abstinence.” Women in French Studies, 2021. (peer-reviewed; accepted in Feb 2021, and forthcoming summer 2021).

“Teaching Mandarin vocabulary using a flipped approach.” Designing Course with Digital Technologies: Evidence and Examples by and for Higher Education Instructors, edited by Stefan Hrastinski, Routledge. (peer-reviewed; forthcoming in August 2021).

Tan graduated from Ohio State in 2018 with a Ph.D. in French and Francophone Studies and a certificate in Second Language Acquisition.
