Introduction to the study of the cinema and to French film classics. Students will explore cinema as an art form, the social and cultural history of France as it relates to the cinema, and the qualities that make individual films cinematic masterpieces. Taught in English.

Comics and Culture
This course examines comic books and graphic novels of the 'Franco-Belgian tradition' ('bande dessinee' or BD), particularly as they engage in questions of the representation of cultures and identities. Taught in English.

This course explores how representations of love have been conditioned by questions of identity (race, gender, sexuality and ethnicity) through representations of eros, romance and friendship in a variety of moving images.

Italian Romances
This course familiarizes students with the adaptability and influence of romance storytelling, from its medieval foundations (King Arthur) to its continued popularity in different forms (fantasy, science fiction, romance novels). Students learn to identify how its themes inform how we ascribe value to some people(s) and deny it to others; and to evaluate how stories can imagine more just worlds.
