My name is Lu Kurucz, and I graduated from Ohio State in May of 2023 with a Bachelor of Arts in French and a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. After graduation, I moved to Boston to pursue a Master of Social Work at Boston University. As part of my curriculum, I am interning at the Boston Public Health Commission. One of my main responsibilities at the commission is heading an English learning group for French and Creole-speaking Haitian immigrants. Being one of the few French speakers at the commission has placed me in a unique position to help an underserved population in Boston. Not only do I have the ability to communicate with this group, but I also entered the situation with confidence despite many barriers. Adjusting to cultural differences and working to communicate with Creole speakers are processes that I have felt prepared for specifically due to my time at FRIT. While I was not anticipating relying on my French degree, being able to work with this group has been exciting and rewarding for both me and the group members. The group has even had enough success that the commission plans to begin a second group modeled after ours. Being bilingual and carrying a sense of cultural humility has opened countless doors for me in the field of social work. I am working towards practicing as a clinical social worker specializing in behavioral health, and I am looking forward to seeing where this path will take me.
