This course examines representations of rebellious and runaway slaves of French-speaking regions and explores how they rejected their oppression through tactics of flight, practices of resistance and resiliency, and modes of belonging and community-formation. Examine how the concept of citizenship through resistance has been represented in literature, film, music, and comics of the French-speaking world created to inspire activism at crucial historical moments. French Kiss

Exploration of cultural texts (stories, songs, films, paintings, photos, etc.) that represent love and sex in France, from medieval courtly love, to 18th-century libertinism, to the swinging 1960s, to dating apps and the #Me Too movement. Mediterranean Food Cultures

Considering it more than a biological necessity, this course approaches food as a way of approaching a region's cultures in an ever-changing world of human and environmental interactions and explores how concerns over agricultural sustainability thus translate into concerns over cultural specificity. Modern Italian Migrations

This course addresses how belonging in contemporary Italy - juridical, social, economic - is intrinsically defined by race. Students interrogate Italian-ness as a racialized identity, as well as how gender and ethnicity contribute to the construction of racial identity.
