Dear Friends of French and Italian,
As we look forward to Spring semester, The Department of French and Italian wishes you all a splendid end-of-2019.
Autumn semester 2019 saw the launch of our #FRITmeans campaign, which celebrates all that we do, and makes sense of FRIT, the acronym for our wonderful Department. A team of students, staff, and faculty collaborated on the campaign, and agreed that FRIT means redefining your frontiers in terms of, for example, travel, revolutionary thinking, becoming multilingual, and exercising the imagination – qualities that are all encapsulated in the Old French Reading Group discussed in this issue.
This issue of FRONTIERE celebrates many events, initiatives, and honors. We recently heard from Jennifer Kmetich and John Lundy, who met in French 103 and got engaged on the oval; they credit the collaborative environment of their French course for their courtship. Teaching excellence is celebrated through Danielle Marx-Scouras receiving the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, and our commitment to community engagement is clear in the outreach seminar “Quebec in and for the 21st Century: Art, Culture and Innovation.”
Looking towards the future, we are thrilled to announce that our community is growing! We are hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Italian film and media studies, and would appreciate your sharing the position description broadly.
You can hear about our wonderful lineup of events, and learn of news regarding all of the exciting things that we are up by subscribing to our Friends of FRIT listserv, and following us on Twitter and Facebook.
Dana Renga, Department Chair
